Why the questions matter

A turnkey pig farm project involves many parts that must fit together: buildings, pens, floors, feeding, drinking, ventilation, manure handling, electrical supply and staff training. When one company is responsible for all of them, a mistake between two parts is that company’s problem. When it is not clear who is responsible, the problem becomes yours.

These 12 questions help you find out, before you sign, what you are really buying.

The 12 questions

# Question What a clear answer looks like
1 What exactly is in the scope? A written list: design, buildings, equipment, installation, commissioning, training, spare parts
2 What is not in the scope? A short list of items you or a local contractor will provide (foundations, utilities, permits)
3 Who is responsible if two parts do not fit? One named party, written in the contract
4 Who makes the equipment? The supplier names the maker; ask whether it is the supplier or a partner
5 Who installs it? The supplier’s own installation team, or a named contractor with a defined scope
6 Will my staff be trained? A training plan with content and timing
7 What drawings will I receive? Master layout, house drawings, installation drawings, equipment list
8 What are the payment milestones? Linked to clear steps, such as drawings approved, shipment, commissioning
9 What warranty applies? A written warranty period and conditions for each type of equipment
10 How do I get spare parts? A spares list with the order, and a way to reorder
11 Will the design follow my local rules? The supplier asks for local building, environmental and welfare rules at the start
12 Can I speak to a person who will manage my project? A named contact and a working language you share

How to compare quotations

Quotations are easy to compare on price and hard to compare on content. Put them side by side in a table:

Item Supplier A Supplier B
Layout and drawings
Buildings
Pens and floors
Feeding and drinking
Climate control
Manure handling
Installation and commissioning
Training
Spare parts
Transport

Any empty cell is a question to ask.

Signs of a good supplier

  • Asks about your herd size, site, climate and local rules before quoting.
  • Explains the layout of the farm, not only the price of the equipment.
  • Gives a written scope and a schedule.
  • Does not promise results it cannot back up, such as exact savings without your data.
